Black Out Dates and Facility Use and Conduct

Black Out Dates and Facility Use and Conduct

Black Out Dates

A blackout date is simply a date in which the schools are not available for practice, i.e., school function, scheduled maintenance, etc.

Please note that it is the responsibility of the Head Coach to communicate this information to parents.  These are the dates that have been shared with us to this point.  From my 13 seasons of coaching experience, I’m confident that additional blackout dates will pop up throughout the season.  Again, SWA has zero control of these situations.  However, we’ll do our best to communicate the information as soon as it’s shared with us.  Please note that the most current blackout dates for the balance of the basketball season are listed on the SWA Basketball website under the link Practice Blackout Dates.  As I was assembling this communication, I received notification that Sunday, November 11this now a blackout date for Heritage Elementary School.  This date will be added to our on-line file later this evening.

Facility Use and Conduct

At our recent coaches meeting, I stated that the use of the school gyms is a privilege.  Therefore, we (coaches, parents, kids, etc.) must do everything humanly possible to ensure that these privileges are not taken away.  Gym space is already at a premium and we can’t afford to lose privileges at even one facility.  We have to leave these gyms in better shape than they were found.

Here are some VERY IMPORTANT points:

  • Gym Supervisors will be present at all practices to ensure security of the facility. They should be identifiable and available to you.  Please be respectful and understand that without them, practices would not be happening.  If no gym supervisor is present, please let league administration know as soon as possible, as we are depending on and paying them to secure the facility.   The league administrator’s contact information is listed on the website.
  • We depend on you as coaches to communicate proper behavior to your players and their parents.  Remind them we are all responsible for taking care of the gyms.  This includes safeguarding of equipment, picking up after themselves, etc.  Please stay out of off-limit areas, i.e., hallways, stage, etc. and ABSOLUTELY NO HANGING ON GOALS.  It’s imperative that non-practicing siblings are supervised at all times!!!!
  • For security purposes, during weekday practices you cannot enter the gym until 6:30 p.m.  The after-school program (SACC) isn’t over until 6:30 p.m.  Also – getting mad and upset with school employees isn’t a good idea.  Trust me – I’ll hear about it!
  • No practices will be allowed when schools are closed.  This includes all holidays, as well as the system wide Thanksgiving and Winter breaks and any days when school is cancelled due to inclement weather.  Please plan accordingly and communicate this to your teams.
  • No make-up slotting will be available.  If you cannot make your normal practice time or the slot is lost due to school cancellations, etc. we do not have the space to reschedule.  PLEASE COMMUNICATE TO LEAGUE ADMINISTRATION IF YOU WILL NOT BE USING YOUR PRACTICE SLOT.
  • Basketballs are not provided by the league for practice.  Players and coaches are responsible for bringing their own basketballs to practice.
  • Games schedules most likely won’t be completed until the week of November 26th.
  • Uniforms and spirit-wear will be given to coaches on November 27th
  • Other than water, please no food or non-water drinks in the gyms at any time (both for practices and games).  We’re blessed beyond words to be able to use the brand-new Thompson’s Station Elementary gym.  As you can imagine, they really want to keep it pristine.  Please help us out and throw away all items that you’ve brought into the gyms.  From time to time, you might see a gym employee eating their lunch and/or dinner inside the gym.  Please don’t scold them because they’re typically tethered to the gym many hours.
